Btooom! is a Japanese manga series written by Junya Inoue and serialized in Weekly Comic Bunch (June 2009 – August 2010) and later in Monthly Comic @BUNCH on June 19, 2009. An anime adaption made by studio Madhouse aired in the Fall season of 2012. A total of 12 episodes were aired. The manga series's 26th volume will have two endings: light for the Friendship Arc and dark for the Truth arc.
Sakamoto Ryōta is an unemployed 22-year-old who lives with his mother. In the real world, there may be nothing really special about him, but online, he's one of the world's top players of the combat game Btooom!.
One day, he awakes in what appears to be a tropical island, though he has no memory of how or why he has come to be there. While wandering around, Ryōta sees someone and calls out for help. The stranger responds by throwing a bomb at him! Now Ryōta realizes both that his life is in danger and that he has somehow been trapped in a real-life version of his favorite game! Will Ryōta be able to survive long enough to figure out how and why he ended up here?
- Main article: Characters
- Many, if not all, names of the characters are taken from historical figures from Feudal Japan, mostly of the Edo or Sengoku period.
- A lot of the chapter title pages make references to popular movies and video games. For example, Chapter 45's cover page has Himiko dressed up similarly to the character "Baby Doll" from the movie Sucker Punch, even having a snowy, Japanese temple in the back ground from one of the more notable scenes from the film.
