(For some odd reason, Masashi's bandana is red in the anime. I have my own suspicions, though I'm unable to confirm them. If you ever do find out, please state as to why such changes were made in the trivia.)

"If you ask me, the people playing the game are the sane ones." — Masashi Miyamoto

Masashi Miyamoto (宮本 雅志 Miyamoto Masashi) was a participant in the real-life Btooom! game. He was originally a member of a group comprised of Himiko, Isamu Kondō, and Mitsuo Akechi, however tensions led Masashi to kill Isamu, thus creating a falling-out with the remaining members. Once on his own, Masashi later forms his own group with Sōichi Natsume and serves as a major antagonist toward Ryōta Sakamoto and his group. He was eventually killed by Himiko and Ryōta in their final encounter.

Appearance

Masashi is a very tall and extremely muscular man. His face sports very rough features to it, such as his dark-tinted, sunken eyes and his slightly large nose. His hair is long, black, and shriveled, and is occasionally seen with large strands draping down the front, with the most reaching down to his nape. Due to his hair being rather long, he is usually seen with his hair kept in a forest camouflage-patterned bandana.

Aside from his bandana, the rest of his attire consists of a black, sleeveless shirt and dark green cargo pants. He is also occasionally seen wearing a dark-green, unfastened military coat, sporting pockets around the front, with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows. His accessories consist of two dark-green sweatband, with one worn on each wrist, and a necklace depicting the cross of Christianity. Unlike many of the participants, he carries a combat knife, which he occasionally makes use of in battles. Like any other Btooom! participant, he also started out with a BIM pouch around his waist and has an IC chip implanted in his left hand. However, his BIM pouch was stolen from him early on and wasn't recovered until much later. After the recovery of his BIM pouch, he is later seen wearing four BIM pouches stolen from Ryōta's alliance - two around each side of his waist and two over each shoulder - in a cross-shaped fashion, with various types of BIM attached.

On a minor note, he is also seen in several scenes smoking a cigarette, suggesting he carried cigarettes on his person while on the island.

Personality

Masashi's personality is that of an indifferent man, who occasionally has kept his distance from the personal dealings of the problems of others. He is, however, easily able to mentally adapt to his situation, which may have been attributed from his previous military occupations. He, at first, explored other opportunities beside participating in the Btooom! game, and when shown little way for escape, quickly asserted his focus on partipating in the Btooom! game, smiling while he made the suggestion itself. When alone, he is both calculating and meticulous. When faced with the problems of others, he is rather apathetic, showing no remorse for anyone affected by his cruelty. He rarely shows warmth, and is instead assertive of his own opinions with a self-righteous nature that continously exerts a justification for his views through the concept of the survival of the fittest, however his sadistic nature thoroughly overshadows such justifications. As a result of his previous military occupations, he also specializes in various forms of warfare, weaponry, and torture. He occasionally takes great pride of being in acknowledgement of such a fact and occasionally exhibits such expertise during various situations, though his overreliance of such skills tends to have him overlook the strategic importance of utilizing both the BIM and the radar.

He tends to be easily irritated by the philosophies of those around him which center around an idealistic notion, prompting him to either preach of more realistic views or resolve his irritation with violence, even to the point of murder.  Whenever in a group, he will either take a commanding role or conflict with the ideas of those taking leadership within a group, prompting many to often fear and/or resent him. Whenever he is taking leadership within a group, he is often proactive, often having others rely on his judgment whenever strategizing is taken into consideration. Although these strategies are proven to be not only practical and somewhat clever, he does not take serious consideration in the safety of his allies, often seeing them as dispensable; this is especially the case several times with Sōichi, in which Masashi was seen exhibiting no empathy toward him - even after his ally's death - and was unhesitant in providing the man with stimulants that he knew were affecting his mentality.

History

Other than what Masashi has mentioned from his past, not much is known of him. What is known of him is his previous occupations. He's mentioned that he used to be an officer of the Japanese Special Defense Force (JSDF), had undergone special army ranger training, and was a member of the French Foreign Legion, which all have attributed toward his expertise in tracking and navigation. Over time, he has continously built his reputation on the battlefield and has obtained personal experienced with both warfare and weaponry as a result of his previous military occupations.

Physical capabilities

Due to Masashi's muscular built, he is very much capable of handling more strenuous tasks than the average person. As a result of his military training and war experience, he also specializes in both unarmed combat and knife combat, allowing him to end battles of physical strength much more easily and quickly.

Intellectual capabilities

Due to his military training and war experience, Masashi is capable of quickly adapting to the situation emotionally, with little to no regard of how unpleasant his situation may be (e.g. the real-life Btooom! game), and has possesses a significant amount of experience in the usage of explosive, which gives him an advantage over many of the other participants when it comes to using the BIM. He has also shown an expertise for torturing humans, which leaves him capable of extracting information while keeping the victim alive as much as possible.

Masashi's ability of acknowledging the mentality of those around him through conversation also allows him to deduce his opponent's movements and thoughts to some extent, which is especially shown when he was plotting to let Ryōta escape in order to track him down to the location of his (Ryōta's) allies. During battle, he is also shown to strategize with the placement of both himself and his ally by creating opportunities for pincer attacks and using choke points to effectively dispatch his opponent. He has also proven himself to be an expert at both tracking and navigation, which allowed him to not only successfully track down his opponent in numerous occasions but also to successfully gather information from his environment.

His sole setback, however, is his tendency to rely on a combat knife and instinct instead of the tools provided, such as the BIM and the radar.
