"If you ask me, the people playing the game are the sane ones." — Masashi Miyamoto

Masashi Miyamoto (宮本 雅志 Miyamoto Masashi) was a participant in the real-life Btooom! game. He was originally a member of a group comprised of Himiko, Isamu Kondō, and Mitsuo Akechi, however, tensions led Masashi to kill Isamu, and thus created a falling-out with the remaining members. Once on his own, Masashi later formed his own group with Sōichi Natsume and served as a major antagonist toward Ryōta Sakamoto's group. He was eventually killed by both Himiko and Ryōta in their final encounter.

Appearance

Masashi is a very tall and extremely muscular man. His face sports very rough features, such as his dark-tinted, sunken eyes and his slightly large nose. His hair is black and shriveled and extends down to his nape. Due to his hair being rather long, he is usually seen with his hair kept in a forest camouflage-patterned bandana. (In the anime, however, his bandana is red.)

Aside from his bandana, his attire consists of a black, sleeveless shirt and dark green cargo pants. He is occasionally seen with a dark-green, unfastened military coat, sporting pockets around the front, with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows when worn. According to Masashi's claim, his military coat was made with a type of resin, which resists electroshock weaponry, and also symbolizes his membership in the French Foreign Legion. His accessories consist of two dark-green sweatbands, with one worn on each wrist, and a necklace depicting the cross of Christianity. His shoes are camouflage-patterned combat boots. Unlike many of the participants, he carries a combat knife, which he makes use of in battles. As a Btooom! participant, Masashi started out with a bandolier and also has an IC chip implanted in his left hand. However, his bandolier was stolen from him early on and wasn't recovered until much later. After the recovery of his bandolier, he is later seen wearing four bandoliers stolen from Ryōta's alliance - two around each side of his waist and two over each shoulder - in a cross-shaped fashion, with various types of BIM attached.

During his final encounter with Himiko and Ryōta, he became severely disfigured, with his body melting away due to the gas emitted from a blazing gas BIM activated by Himiko.

On a minor note, he is seen in several scenes smoking a cigarette, implying he carried several cigarettes on his person while on the island.

Personality

Masashi's personality is that of an indifferent man who keeps his distance from the personal dealings of others, often seeing these people as inferior to himself. He is, however, easily able to mentally adapt to his situation. He, at first, explored other opportunities of escape, however, when he was presented with no other option he quickly resorted to violence to accomplish his goal.

When faced with others, he is rather apathetic, showing no remorse for anyone affected by his cruelty, and is very calculating. He justifies his behavior solely on the concept of the survival of the fittest, however his sadistic nature often overshadows such justifications. He will, at times, assert his own opinions based on a realist perspective and criticize the opinions of others, especially when their based on a idealist perspective. When irritated, he is unhesitant in resorting to violence and other underhanded tactics toward others, even to the point of killing them.

Whenever in a group, he will either take a commanding role or conflict with the group's leadership. Whenever he is taking leadership within a group, he proves to be a very proactive leader. His decision-making skills often has others rely on his judgment in terms of strategy. Although these strategies are proven to be not only practical and somewhat clever, he neglects the safety of his allies, often seeing them as dispensable; this is especially the case with Sōichi, as Masashi exhibited no empathy toward him - even after his ally's death - and was unhesitant in providing the man with stimulants that damaged his rationality.

As a result of his previous military occupations, he specializes in various forms of warfare, weaponry, and torture. He occasionally takes great pride in his many areas of expertise and occasionally exhibits them in various situations, though his overreliance of such skills tends to have him overlook the strategic importance of utilizing both the BIM's and the radar.

History

Other than what Masashi has mentioned from his past, not much else is known of him. What is known of him is his previous occupations. He's mentioned that he had been an officer of the Japanese Special Defense Force (JSDF), had undergone special army ranger training, and had been a member of the French Foreign Legion. It is through these experiences that he has accumulated personal experience with many skills, including tracking, warfare, and knowledge of weaponry and torture.

Plot

On the morning of the first day, Masashi, along with Isamu and Mitsuo, encounter a sleeping Himiko. Shortly after, Masashi fishes with a cracker BIM, and then brings what fish he has obtained to the rest of the group. As they eat their meal, Masashi has a discussion with Isamu about their situation on the island. He notes to the others that escape is improbable, given how isolated the island is, and that they may have to kill in order to survive. However, Isamu objects to such thoughts, demanding that they be more focused on the group's well-being instead. This irritates Masashi, prompting the man to insult Isamu. The argument then escalates drastically when Masashi produces a BIM from his bandolier, to which Isamu responds with reaching for his own. In order to make a point of how powerless Isamu is, Masashi takes Himiko hostage and forces Isamu into a dilemma. As Isamu struggles to make his choice, Himiko produces a taser and attempts to stun Masashi. The man immediately lets her go. Shortly after, Mitsuo argues that their conflicts are due to their amount of weapons. He then proposes for a person to act as leader, and for that leader to watch over their weapons. When questioned, he suggests Himiko for leader, which both Masashi and Isamu agree upon.[1]

At noon, Masashi, along with Himiko and Mitsuo, take note of a cargo plane flying overhead and sees it dropping several supply packages via parachute. They quickly head over to the nearest one. Once at the site of the supply package, they proceed to open it, and discover various items, including food and water. They then begin to devour the food and water, to which Masashi encourages. However, upon Isamu's appearance, their actions are quickly opposed by him. As Isamu begins to explain the importance of rationing, Masashi comes up from behind and slits Isamu's throat with his combat knife. Isamu later succumbs to his wound. Soon after, Isamu's IC chip is possessed by Masashi. [2]

On the morning of the second day, Masashi's presence is sensed by a sonar wave from Mitsuo nearby, revealing that he was following them. Upon reaching a nearby bridge, Masashi confronts the two and learns about the existence of the radar from Mitsuo. He then attempts to advance, however, he soon retreats after Mitsuo hurls a blazing gas BIM at him. Whilst eluding the gas, Masashi notes to himself its lethality on the plants before retreating further into the jungle to track them later. [3]

On the morning of the third day, Masashi is seen killing a komodo dragon with his combat knife, remarking to himself of how entertaining the island has been. His group, later that morning, sends out a sonar wave, which reacts to Himiko's IC chip. Shortly afterward, Masashi attempts to kill Ryōta with his combat knife, though his presence is sensed by Ryōta's sonar wave just in time for the Ryōta to dodge his attack. After Ryōta stumbles backward, Masashi proceeds to flank Ryōta's left, though his presence is sensed yet again by Ryōta's sonar wave. Once Ryōta retreats, Masashi gives chase. Shortly after, Ryōta manages to produce a cracker BIM and threaten Masashi. Ryōta then proceeds to negotiate with Masashi, telling him that Tyrannos Japan is responsible for their situation and his plan to collect information in order to escape. However, negotiations fail after Masashi notes the flaws in his argument. Frustrated, Ryōta begins to leave but is stopped when Sōichi casts a timer BIM in his direction. After Ryōta dodges the explosion, Masashi strikes Ryōta with the butt of his combat knife.

Sōichi proceeds to discuss Ryōta's fate with Masashi, though this ends shortly when Ryōta stuns Sōichi with Himiko's taser. After Ryōta escapes, Sōichi apologizes to Masashi. However, Masashi isn't angered by this event. Masashi tells Sōichi that he had deduced that Ryōta and had been planning to let the man go in order to have him lead them to Ryōta's allies. The two then proceed to track down Ryōta.

Once at Ryōta's base, Masashi reappears to confront Ryōta, Himiko, and Kiyoshi Taira, with his combat knife. Once there, he briefly tells the group of his past and why he was able to easily track Ryōta. As Masashi studies his surroundings, he notes that Himiko still possesses both the supplies and BIM she took from him and Mitsuo's absence. He then questions Himiko on whether she had killed Mitsuo or not and . Ryōta, however, with Himiko's taser, protests, commenting that Tyrannos Japan must've left holes that they could exploit. However, much to Ryōta's dismay, none of this is taken seriously by Masashi. As Masashi advances toward Ryōta, Masashi notes that, due to his military coat having been made from a certain resin, the taser's effectiveness would be reduced.

Kiyoshi attempts to restrain Masashi from behind, telling Ryōta to stun him. However, Masashi violently flips Kiyoshi over onto the ground and severs four of the man's left fingers, save for his thumb. As Kiyoshi bleeds, wincing, Masashi attempts to crush Kiyoshi's severed fingers. Provoked, Ryōta rushes Masashi with Himiko's taser, prompting him to kick Ryōta with enough force to send him off the cliff. Once Masashi approaches the edge, he remarks of the difficulty in retrieving Ryōta's IC chip. Himiko then takes the opportunity to make her escape, however, she is captured by Sōichi. Shortly after, Kiyoshi threatens Masashi with his homing BIM, demanding Himiko's release. Masashi then replies that he'll wait for him to die in order to safely retrieve his BIM. With that said, Masashi leaves with both Ryōta's BIM and the group's supplies.

Once at their base, Masashi and Sōichi begin to devour their newly obtained supplies. Himiko, however, protests to such actions, and irritates Masashi by doing so. Masashi produces his combat knife and tells Himiko of "the joys of the battlefield." He then begins to torture Himiko, however, he is interrupted shortly by a sonar wave sent from an unknown person. After having their location revealed, Masashi calls for a retreat. Although, after Himiko and the unknown person exchange two sonar waves from each other, Masashi reveals to Sōichi that Ryōta is alive. The two then prepare for battle.

As the two move about in their base, Masashi devises a pincer attack, with both Sōichi and himself splitting up. Before they do, however, Masashi, at Sōichi's requests, supplies Sōichi with stimulants in order to repress the man's sense of fear. Masashi then advises Sōichi to set his timer BIM's to three seconds.

As Masashi moves into position, he senses a sonar wave from Ryōta, and notes that the man is heading toward Sōichi's position. Soon after, an explosion is heard, which Masashi assumes to be from Sōichi's BIM. However, a sonar wave is unexpectedly sent, which reveals a person heading toward Masashi's position. This confounds Masashi. After another sonar wave is sent, Masashi concludes from the lack of explosions that Sōichi had been killed. He then positions himself closer to the person's pathway to lay an ambush. Once the person arrives in range, Masashi ambushes him.
